Jamie Lisa Forbes was raised on a ranch in the Little Laramie Valley near Laramie, Wyoming. She graduated from the University of Colorado in 1977 where she obtained degrees in English and philosophy. From 1979 to 1993, she raised her own family on the family ranch.

In 1994, she moved to Greensboro, North Carolina. In 2001, she graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law and began her North Carolina law practice. Since 2001, she has had a general civil practice including family law, incompetency and guardianship, juvenile law, estate administration, estate disputes, insurance issues, personal injury, tax, employment and breach of contract matters.

In June 2024, she completed the training for a collaborative law practice.

Currently, she limits her practice to family law, incompetency and guardianship, estate administration, estate disputes and litigation, tax and collaborative law cases.

She is also a published novelist.
